Working with NGOs

Domesteq works with local and international NGOs to create tailored training modules to help the unemployed and unskilled individual enter the workforce. Working with organisations whose mission it is to improve the living conditions and employability of impoverished communities, Domesteq provides training for relevant skills that match jobs in the local community.

In Delhi and the NCR there is a desperate need for trained domestic workers as well as for low-level office staff. For most of these jobs literacy is not required but basic work ethic and organisational skills are highly valued. Working with the NGO’s we reach-out to their unemployed community members to help them see the dignity in working in these sectors while at the same time providing necessary skill training and access to jobs.

Domesteq works with the community members to help them understand how their skills equal employability and ensure that they are aware of their individual rights. Once trained, Domesteq works with the NGO to find jobs for the community members in homes and offices that offer fair wages and fair working conditions.

Curricula for this segment of the population is focused around employable skills but always includes; teaching participants job accountability, ethics, and work organisation, the importance of punctuality, personal hygiene, basic etiquette, communication skills, interview techniques and personal security.

Domesteq has a unique method of teaching workers from impoverished communities. Our trainers introduce to the course participants, a local family or team of managers that are easily recognizable and relevant to the community we are teaching. Our images are drawn by a local artist and were developed during a series of focus groups with the target audience (i.e. Domestic Workers). family is introduced by name and students get to know the family by learning about their characteristics and likes and dislikes.

The family that we currently use is Delhi-based and living in an extended family environment. However, the method is easily adaptable and the characters are adapted to match specific regional attributes and characteristics. By placing these family members in different situations we are able to put across important ideas and teach practical and theoretical skills.
